Even Mild Sleep Apnea Increases Stroke Risk

April 15, 2010

Recent data from the Sleep Heart Health Study show that even moderate levels of sleep apnea can significantly increase the risk of stroke for both men and women. For men, the presence of sleep apnea increased stroke risk as much as adding 10 years of age! This study adds to the significant evidence linking sleep apnea to other cardiovascular diseases, including high blood pressure and heart attack.
Sleep apnea is a common disorder, affecting up to 10% of adult men. Symptoms include loud snoring, poor sleep quality and daytime sleepiness.
There are now a variety of treatment options for sleep apnea, including minimally invasive options that can be conveniently performed in the doctor’s office. If you suspect that you or a loved one has sleep apnea, don’t delay – talk with your doctor or call The Snoring Center today!
