The Real Cost of a Good Night’s Sleep

October 28, 2011

So the other week I came across this article on Bloomberg, talking about the cost of a good nights’ sleep.
They went through a list of items, ranging from mattresses to gym memberships to self help books for better sleep to snoring treatment, and came up with a price tag of $16,000. It’s a silly article really, and certainly a gross exaggeration of what you need to spend to sleep well. But it does highlight the importance of a good night’s sleep – and in particular, the economic value of healthy, restorative sleep.

Sleep deficit (and I’m talking as little as getting an hour less than you need) can meaningfully impact your job performance. Sleep deficit impairs memory, decreases math processing skills and reaction speed – all attributes that directly affect one’s day-to-day performance. Several studies have even shown that people who don’t sleep well were less likely to be promoted than comparable people who did sleep well. So getting good sleep really matters – for physical and mental health, but also for your economic well being.

Sleep well, my friends!
